hinge: wingman
a feature suite for Hinge that supports more intentional conversations and real-world connections

problem
Online dating often loses momentum after two people match. Repetitive conversations, unclear digital cues, and uncertainty around meeting in person make it difficult for users to build genuine connections.
solution
Wingman is a feature suite for Hinge that helps users navigate the space between matching and meeting. Rather than generating messages, it uses AI to provide context, guidance, and planning tools that support more intentional, authentic conversations.
Through interviews, surveys, competitor analysis, and secondary research, we identified opportunities to better support Hinge's post-match experience. I helped define the product strategy, interaction design, and AI principles that shaped the final concept.

Research revealed that Hinge supports users well through onboarding and matching but offers little guidance once conversations begin. Rather than replacing authentic communication with AI-generated messages, we explored how AI could provide lightweight support through conversation insights, shared interests, and collaborative planning while keeping users in control.

Feature Concept
01
mapping modern dating experiences
We synthesized our research findings using affinity mapping, persona creation, and journey mapping to uncover users’ communication patterns and behaviors in both online and offline dating environments.
02
exploring concepts and setting priorities
We began the ideation phase with quick sketching sessions to generate a wide range of feature ideas based on user needs, then used the MoSCoW method to evaluate each concept based on feasibility, user impact, and alignment with our project goals.
03
integrating AI with intention
Before moving into the design phase, we included a few AI-related questions in a broader survey about dating and communication. These questions explored how users felt about the use of AI in dating apps. Out of 47 participants, 25 (53.2%) said they were either fully open to it or open to it if it supported authentic and meaningful connections.
04
understanding conversations
Many users struggle to interpret texting cues or wonder how their messages come across. These tools provide insight into communication patterns and tone, helping users reflect on conversations without generating replies for them.
05
breaking the ice
Starting meaningful conversations can feel repetitive. By surfacing shared interests and mutual context, Wingman helps users begin more natural conversations without relying on generic prompts.
06
planning the first date
Moving from messaging to meeting is often the biggest hurdle. Meet Cute makes planning feel collaborative by helping matches discover low-pressure date ideas and coordinate plans together.
07
remembering what matters
As conversations grow, it's easy to lose track of important details. Match Memos creates lightweight summaries so users can remember interests, plans, and meaningful moments without rereading entire chats.
